What is it:
There are different types of Keto diets, but in general it is a high fat, moderate/high protein-based diet reducing or eliminating carbohydrate intake.
How it works:
When you reduce or eliminate carbohydrates from your diet, your body has to break down its own fat stores (into “KETOnes”) to be used as energy.
Some potential health benefits:
May help reduce excess carbohydrate/sugar intake.
May help reduce total calorie intake which can lead to weight-loss.
May help people consume more “whole, non-processed” foods.
Some potential health risks:
Carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains provide many important vitamins and minerals and have many health benefits such as helping digestion, joints, and preventing disease.
High-fat and high-protein diets may cause health problems and weight-gain.
Our take:
We believe consuming a diet that contains all the vital nutrients (including carbohydrates from vegetables, fruits, and whole-grains) is best. However, nutrition varies depending on many factors and some people may find they may need less or more of a certain nutrient.
And remember, whenever you begin to make changes to your diet, never make drastic changes, always make slow changes over a longer period of time!
